Legislator: Exempt pathologists from MU

U.S. House Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) has introduced legislation that would exempt pathologists and their laboratories from Meaningful Use (MU) requirements.

Pathologists do not interact with patients to a degree to meet MU measures, nor do they use a core EHR, and should not be penalized for noncompliance through reduced Medicare payments, according to the legislation, H.R. 1309. The bill was referred to the Commerce & Energy and Ways & Means Committees. Read the full text of the bill.

Price was an orthopedic surgeon in private practice for nearly 20 years before becoming an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine and medical director at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He served in the Georgia Senate before election to Congress in November 2004.
