Humana to open clinics at 23 empty Walmart Health locations

Humana has finalized a deal to open its own clinics at 23 empty Walmart Health clinics in four states.

The insurer’s CenterWell and Conviva branded care centers will be opened at locations across Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas by the first half of 2025, the company said in an announcement. Once fully staffed, equipped and operating, the clinics will provide primary care services to seniors.

Currently, both brands are focused on delivering care to older Americans, with CenterWell being the fastest-growing senior-focused primary care outlet in the country, Humana noted.

“CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with high quality healthcare that is accessible, comprehensive and, most of all, personalized,” Sanjay Shetty, MD, president of CenterWell, said in the announcement. “We are excited by the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner such as Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care.“

“These nearly two dozen primary care centers are specifically designed for seniors, and each location’s design, including dedicated entrances and easy parking, offers patients the access that they have come to expect at our clinics across the nation. We are eager to expand on our mission to help patients lead happier, healthier lives,” Shetty added.

Some of the vacant clinics being taken over by CenterWell will operate adjacently to Walmart’s retail stores, the companies noted.

Walmart announced the shuttering of its unprofitable Walmart Health division in April, which included an end to telehealth services and the closure of all 51 primary and urgent care clinics nationwide. In June, the telehealth wing, MeMD, was sold to technology company Fabric

Walmart will be leasing the spaces to Humana for an undisclosed amount of time. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
