Faith-based investors sue UnitedHealth over lack of impact reporting | DOJ probed medical schools over alleged DEI admissions

Led by a Quebec-based faith organization, a coalition of investors is asking a court to force UnitedHealth to provide details on the social impacts of its history of mergers and acquisitions. The lawsuit comes after the plaintiffs, all company shareholders, failed to get the proposal passed through internal channels. The Securities and Exchange Commission has also opted not to intervene. 

Ohio State University College of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine and UC San Diego School of Medicine all received letters this week where federal authorities are requesting details related to admissions, including standardized test scores, donor correspondence and more. The schools say they are already compliant with state and federal regulations. 

Almost two in five physicians suffered moral distress in the two weeks leading up to their being asked about it by researchers. That was a markedly larger slice than the team observed in the general U.S. working population.

University of Mississippi Medical Center said it’s still processing paper backups and has extended clinic hours to address the backlog of elective surgeries and bring revenue back up to expectations. The attack happened in February and caused non-emergency operations at the health system to shut down for nine days. 

In a lawsuit seeking class action status, a woman identified as “P.M.” said she began using the website for Kisqali, a Novartis breast cancer treatment, in late 2024 shortly after being issued a prescription. Unbeknownst to her, sensitive data she shared when seeking a discount may have been shared with advertisers.

The U.S. Department of Justice said ExThera cooperated with the investigation into a failure to file adverse event notices with the Food and Drug Administration after two cancer patients who used its blood filtration systems in Antigua died shortly after returning home. The California-based company’s former chief regulatory officer has agreed to plead guilty and could serve prison time. 

The two men, Frank Incognito, 46, and Stephen Corba, 50, conspired with doctors in a scheme involving the fraudulent purchase of critical cancer and macular degeneration drugs, which were then diverted and resold for profit. The U.S. Department of Justice said the unlawful pact lasted seven years.

Philips worked closely with Edwards Lifesciences to develop the new software.
