Virtualization, speech recognition poised for growth

Virtualization software and dictation with speech recognition are technologies showing the highest adoption rate within the hospital IT market, according to a recent report from HIMSS Analytics.

With historical compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20 percent or greater, the two applications showed an “aggressive” adoption rate compared with other applications covered in the report, including health information management; document/forms management; information system security; IS infrastructure; ambulatory; and home health, the report found.

One technology showing “strong” growth—with historical CAGR of 15 percent or greater—was single sign-on. “Progressive” technologies with between 10 and 15 percent historical CAGR listed in the report included: electronic forms management; ambulatory EMR, disaster recovery system; and ambulatory PACS.

The remaining 15 applications reflected a growth trajectory of less than 10 percent; these are: encryption; firewall; spam/spyware filter; interface engines; document management; Database management systems; home health clinical; dictation; chart deficiency; chart tracking/locator; home health administrative; practice management; abstracting; encode; and in-house transcription.
