Thousands of physician sex abuse cases kept secret, investigation finds

A national investigation by the Atlanta Journal Constitution identified 2,400 cases of physicians sexually abusing their patients, with more than half still having active medical licenses.

The AJC said many more cases are dealt with in secret by regulators and state boards, and hospitals, clinics and other physicians may fail to report abuse—or rely on physicians to “self-report.”

“While the vast majority of the nation's 900,000 doctors do not sexually abuse patients, the AJC found the phenomenon is akin to the priest scandal: It doesn't necessarily happen every day, but it happens far more often than anyone has acknowledged,” the report said.
