Surescripts: 23% of providers e-prescribing in 2009
U.S. e-prescribing network Surescripts has reported that more than 140,000 (23 percent) of all office-based physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in the United States are now e-prescribing.
The Alexandria, Va., and St. Paul, Minn.-based company gives healthcare providers electronic access to prescription and health information of payors and pharmacies nationwide. E-prescribing has been used for tracking and managing potential drug interactions with other medications using automatic electronic record keeping.
The network saw a 38 percent increase in the available number of EMR systems and types of e-prescribing online since the beginning of 2009.
Surescripts projected that its total number of active e-prescribers in 2009 will more than double the 74,000 active e-prescribers at the end of 2008.
