Population health, patient engagement driving HIT spending

Health IT purchases primarily are driven by population health and patient engagement, according to a report from peer60.

Data security also is a high priority for provider organizations in 2016, despite ranking near the bottom of health IT leaders' wish lists for 2015.

The survey of 567 hospital leaders included 29 percent from individuals at hospitals with 1-25 beds, 20 percent from individuals at hospitals with 101-250 beds, 9 percent from individuals from ambulatory hospitals and individuals from hospitals with 500-1,000 beds and 1,001-plus beds, respectively, each represented 10 percent of responses.

When asked about "EHR vendor mindshare," the majority of respondents cited Epic, followed by MEDITECH and Cerner, while athenahealth was noted for being the "fastest riser" among vendors. Epic also ranked first for population health, patient engagement and revenue cycle mindshare.

Cisco ranked No. 1 in data security mindshare at 30 percent, with the next highest vendor being VMWare at 19 percent.
