Listen up: Music therapy packs potential to improve brain function

Researchers have long known music can lead to health benefits. Now, an application aims to further integrate music therapy into the healthcare field.

MedRhythms is one method of harnessing the power of music for health purposes. MedRhythms uses neurologic music therapy to treat parts of the brain that are nonmusical such as language, cognition, memory and movement.

Brian Harris, co-founder of MedRhythms, was inspired by his first session alongside a music therapist as an undergraduate student. He saw a developmentally delayed teenager improve his behavior and brain function after just 10 minutes.

“At that moment I realized my calling in life was to do this work,” Harris said. “It wasn’t a magical response—we could figure out why this boy was having this response and we could really harness that power and replicate it for a lot of people.”
