How baby boomers influence the healthcare field

Some 77 million American baby boomers are currently in or near their the golden years, forcing the healthcare industry to accomodate their needs. As this population increasingly visits hospitals and doctors, the entire industry needs to change to handle the influx of patients.

Dilip Jeste, professor of geriatric psychiatry and director of the University of California, San Diego, Center for Healthy Aging, explained why boomers aren’t quite as healthy as one might think.

“With many jobs requiring more sedentary work, longer commuting, more television watching, etc., middle-aged baby boomers were found to have less average physical activity than middle-aged folks from previous generations,” he said.
