Healthcare job growth expected through 2020
BLS’ employment projections found that total employment is expected to grow by 14.3 percent through 2020, resulting in 20.5 million jobs. Healthcare and social assistance should see the most gain with 5.6 million jobs.
Employment in healthcare support occupations is predicted to grow the fastest, at 34.5 percent, followed by personal care and services occupations at 26.8 percent and healthcare practitioners and technical jobs at 25.9 percent.
Registered nurses, home health aides and personal care aides are expected to be among the occupations that add the most jobs with 712,000, 706,000 and 607,000 positions, respectively.
In addition to releasing its economic projections through 2020, BLS released its employment outlook for January, which found that the economy added 243,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent.
As has been the trend, the healthcare sector continued to add jobs in January (more than 31,000) with hospitals and ambulatory care services each adding 13,000.
