Former Starbucks president enters healthcare industry

The former president of the North American operations for the Starbucks Coffee Company, John Richards, has moved into the healthcare space as the CEO of The Joint Corp.

The healthcare industry makes $85 billion a year on the diagnosis and treatment of neck and back pain, making these diagnoses more frequent then those for diabetes. According to Richards, there is currently too much variation for patients in processing, assessment, treatment and payment. He plans to implement a retail-based model that can double clinic volumes every year. While this assumption sounds like overreaching, Richards increased the number of Starbucks stores from 500 to 3,000 in just three years while expanding the Four Seasons Hotel chain from eight to 40 locations in 20 countries.
