Communication tech speeds ahead—all while interoperability lags

Communication applications and technology have grown exponentially in the past few years, yet sharing information from device to device remains difficult. Progress in improving interoperability is slow in part due to security concerns in sharing data among the platforms.

Collaborating through text messages, email and apps has become the norm in healthcare organizations, but sharing information is difficult when organizations rely on different communicative avenues. With improved interoperability, organizations could seamlessly share data.

"The biggest challenge is monitoring so many different apps. The lack of interoperability is a growing challenge. So far, vendors are not addressing it," said Irwin Lazar, an analyst at Nemertes Research.
