Artificial leaves could be drug factories

With photosynthesis, plants use sunlight to produce their own food. Dutch scientists have harnessed this type of approach to create an artificial leaf that uses a type of photosynthesis to create drugs wherever the sun shines.

The leaf acts as a mini factory by taking solar radiation and creates medicine through a luminescent solar concentrator.

"Theoretically, you could use this device to make drug compounds with solar energy anywhere you want," said lead researcher Timothy Noel at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
