AHIP, BCBSA align for Web portal in Ohio data exchange

Starting in November, America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) will sponsor regional and statewide initiatives to assess how best to offer Ohio physicians access to multiple health insurers through a common Web portal.

“This new tool will allow Ohio physician practices to check patient eligibility, benefit coverage, and claim status all from one source,” said Mark Jarvis, senior director of practice economics at the Ohio State Medical Association.

The goal is to ultimately develop regional services that span the entire country.

Supported by various Ohio-based physician organizations, national health plans that are participating include Aetna, Cigna and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

The Ohio initiative gives physicians access to current information on claims’ statuses submitted by their office for payment by insurers. It will also test real-time referrals and provide for the online submission of healthcare claims. Under the Ohio initiative, office staff will be able determine key eligibility and benefit information, according to AHIP and BCBSA.

As debate simmers over how best to regulate AI, experts continue to offer guidance on where to start, how to proceed and what to emphasize. A new resource models its recommendations on what its authors call the “SETO Loop.”

FDA Commissioner Robert Califf, MD, said the clinical community needs to combat health misinformation at a grassroots level. He warned that patients are immersed in a "sea of misinformation without a compass."

With generative AI coming into its own, AI regulators must avoid relying too much on principles of risk management—and not enough on those of uncertainty management.
