ACA drives boost in hospital admissions

The Affordable Care Act has extended insurance coverage to millions of Americans—and it looks like they are using it. Tenet Healthcare and HCA Holdings, two of the largest hospital operators in the U.S., announced surprisingly strong profits and increases in hospital admissions for the first quarter of 2016.

“In the first quarter, we saw approximately 12,500 same-facility exchange admissions as compared to the 9,860 we saw in the first quarter of last year, or about a 27 percent increase,” said William Rutherford, CFO of HCA Holdings, during a conference call with analysts earlier this week. “We saw about 11,200 same-facility exchange admissions in the fourth quarter of 2015, or 11 percent increase sequentially quarter-to-quarter.”
