3D AR improved facial reconstructive results

Plastic surgery researchers have utilized augmented reality (AR) to create 3D simulations in facial reconstructive surgery. The study, published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open, examined the benefits of using the AR system during plastic surgery.

Led by Koichi Ueda, MD, PhD, Daisuke Mitsuno, MD, and colleagues, the study examined eight procedures using the AR system to evaluate results. The AR system began using a high-definition digital camera to take a 3D image of the patient's face. With computed tomography scans, researchers then created a full 3D simulation of the surgery results.

"Augmented reality is a technology that combines computer-generated images on a screen with a real object or scene," Ueda and Mitsuno said. "We sought to develop a sophisticated yet simple and modifiable AR technique for use during plastic and reconstructive surgery."

Results showed the AR system improved the planning and overall results of the procedure.

“This study confirmed that AR technology is helpful for evaluation of the body surface in several clinical applications,” the authors wrote. “Our findings are not only useful for body surface evaluation but also for effective utilization of AR technology in the field of plastic surgery.”
