MIT, industry collaborate on personal health devices
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in partnership with GE Healthcare and Analog Devices, has launched the Medical Electronic Device Realization Center (MEDRC), charged with developing electronic devices, diagnostics and treatments and technologies for information-driven healthcare systems.
“The vision of MEDRC is to transform the medical electronic device industries, to revolutionize medical diagnostics and treatments, [to bring] healthcare directly to the individual; and to create enabling technology for the future information-driven healthcare system,” MEDRC stated.
Some areas that show promise are wearable or minimally invasive monitoring devices, medical imaging, laboratory instrumentation and the data flow from these devices and instruments to healthcare providers and caregivers, according to the center.
The center will be led by Charlie Sodini, LeBel Professor of Electrical Engineering (Microsystems Technology Laboratories); Brian W. Anthony, Director of the Master of Engineering in Manufacturing Program (Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity); and Joel Voldman, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (Research Laboratory of Electronics and Microsystems Technology Laboratories).
Separately, researchers from GE Global Research's Ultrasound Lab will work with MIT researchers to develop a new ultrasound probe and system as their first MEDRC project, GE stated.
