Medtronic wins $101.2M in damages from NuVasive
Medtronic has successfully sued NuVasive for patent infringement to the tune of $101.2 million. A jury awarded the judgment over claims related to medical devices used in spinal surgery, according to numerous reports.
Meanwhile the federal jury, convened in San Diego, held Medtronic liable for $660,000 in damages to NuVasive for infringing one of its patents.
Bloomberg News reported that the verdict in Medtronic's favor is the 14th-largest jury award in the U.S. in 2011 and the fourth-largest for a patent-infringement claim.
NuVasive said in a statement that it will “aggressively challenge this verdict.”
Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic has around 41,000 employees and reported revenues of $14.6 billion in 2009. NuVasive is headquartered in San Diego, employs around 350 and took in $154 million in 2007. Both companies are publicly traded.
