Analysis shows hospitals and physicians are rarely penalized for privacy and security breaches

Despite federal government claims to protect the security and privacy of medical records, officials have rarely penalized hospitals, physicians and health insurance companies, ProPublica reports.

According to ProPublica, healthcare providers and organizations have reported more than 1,140 large breaches to the Office for Civil Rights since October 2009. During that time period, the Office for Civil Rights have penalized healthcare organizations 22 times.
