Who’s the boss? Atrium-UNC Health merger killed over leadership structure

Discussions for a blockbuster merger between Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas Healthcare) and UNC Health Care have ceased, according to the Charlotte Observer, because executives were unable to solve disagreements on the structure of the joint operating company’s leadership.

“We have remained steadfast in our belief that together we would be uniquely positioned to transform health care – by significantly enhancing the academic mission, creating an organization that will serve more people in better ways, and enhancing our ability to address our state’s most pressing issues including rural care, behavioral health and affordability,” Atrium CEO Gene Woods and Atrium Board of Commissioners Chair Edward Brown wrote in the letter.

Though the venture, which would have had 60 hospitals and 90,000 employees, is dead, the two organizations will continue to partner in serving rural populations and expanding medical education.
