AHA supports adoption of e-fund transfers, remittance operating rules

The American Hospital Association (AHA) has issued a comment to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, voicing support for an interim final rule regarding Adoption of Operating Rules for Healthcare Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) and Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) Transactions contained in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

“The AHA is pleased that CMS has called for adoption of operating rules authored by the Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange,” read an Oct. 3 letter authored by Linda E. Fishman, senior vice president of policy analysis and development. “We urge CMS to quickly propose adoption of a standard acknowledgement transition as part of the set of HIPAA transaction standards to clear the way for total adoption of CORE’s operating rules.”

The rule will benefit providers and health plans by recognizing the interdependence of the EFT and the ERA, and requiring greater consistency on the part of health plans when using claim adjustment reason codes and remittance advice remark codes, according to the letter.
