Meet the top billionaires of the healthcare industry
The healthcare industry is projected to make up 20% of U.S. GDP in the coming years, and the growing sector has created some very wealthy companies and owners.
Bloomberg ranked the 500 richest people in the world in its Bloomberg Billionaires Index, with several healthcare names making the list.
Here are the five richest people in healthcare and their overall rank in the full list:
89. Carl Cook––$16B
Owner and CEO of medical device manufacturer Cook Group, Carl Cook was ranked No. 89 in the overall list and was the richest healthcare person. His Bloomington, Indiana-based company produces products such as catheters, dilators, stents and wire guides, according to Bloomberg. Cook Group reported about $2.4 billion in 2018 revenues.
100. Zhong Huijan––$14.4B
Zhing is the founder and chairman of Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group, which is the largest maker of psychotropic drugs in China. The company’s chemotherapy drug currently has about 40% of the China market, according to Bloomberg. Hansoh produces roughly 50 medicines and had $1.1 billion in revenue in 2018.
102. Thomas Frist––$14.4B
With ownership of 20% of HCA Healthcare, Frist is one of the wealthiest people in healthcare. The company, which is based in Nashville and is an administrator of 300 hospitals and surgery centers in its network, had one of biggest ever private equity buyout deals ever in 2006. The company reported $46.7 billion in revenue in 2018.
107. Sun Piaoyang––$13.5B
Sun is the former leader and chairman of a Chinese producer of anti-cancer drugs, Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine. The company, which reported revenue of $2.6 billion in 2018, makes anti-tumor, anti-infective and painkiller drugs.
150. Cen Jud––$10.6B
Cen is also a part of Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine as a shareholder. The company has produced three billionaires.
