Movers & Shakers: New leaders announced for CVS Health, other healthcare organizations

CVS Health appoints leader for Health Care Delivery 

Amar Desai, MD, has been appointed president of CVS Health’s Health Care Delivery organization, effective Oct. 17.

The Health Care Delivery business is a new organization from CVS Health that oversees key areas of the company's health services and care delivery strategy. CVS Health has increasingly added more care services over the last several years, including ramping up virtual care offerings and acquiring health insurer Aetna. It also recently announced it will acquire Signify Health for $8 billion. 

"This new organization will leverage the strength of the CVS Health portfolio to develop and implement payor-agnostic products and services," CVS Health President and CEO Karen S. Lynch said in a statement

Desai will oversee the clinical delivery strategy to support retail health, chronic disease management and behavioral health. He will report directly to Lynch. Prior to joining CVS, Desai served as president and CEO of Optum Pacific West, where he oversaw an integrated delivery network of more than 20,000 physicians serving 2.5 million patients. He also previously served as president of HealthCare Partners. 

Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics appoints COO

Gina Hawley, DrPH, MHA, has been named chief operating officer of Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics, effective Jan. 3, 2023. 

Hawley has held previous roles at Oregon Health and Science University, Johns Hopkins Medicine and other institutions. Starting in her career as a nursing assistant, Hawley has deep academic health system experience. She most recently served as vice president of professional and support services for OHSU, where she oversaw 14 allied health, clinical program and service lines, central services and support services departments. 

The COO is responsible for  providing leadership for the operations and execution of key strategies across U of U Health Hospitals and Clinics and its related entities. Hawley will be responsible for quality outcomes, patient satisfaction and financial performance.
