Movers & Shakers: CEO departures at Duke Health and Bozeman Health

Welcome to Movers & Shakers, a roundup of the latest executive movements in the healthcare industry.

Duke University Health System CEO to step down in 2023

A. Eugene Washington, MD, chancellor for health affairs at Duke University and president and CEO for the Duke University Health System, has announced his plan to step down from his roles, effective June 30, 2023.

Washington has led Duke since 2015, helping transform Duke’s reach and impact beyond medical care into other determinants of population health, the institution said in a press release. In 2016, with this transformation in mind, the organization changed its name from Duke Medicine to Duke Health under Washington’s leadership. He also helped establish the population health management office within Duke University Health System and a department of population health sciences in the School of Medicine.

Prior to Duke, Washington served as executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and  vice chancellor for health sciences, Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and CEO of UCLA Health.

Duke will conduct a search for a new successor and announce its plans in the coming weeks.

Bozeman Health CEO departs

John Hill, president and CEO of Bozeman Health, is stepping down from his role, the Bozeman Health system board announced.

Kathryn Bertany, MD, has been named interim CEO and president, effective Nov. 1.

"The board of directors and I have mutually agreed that I will end my tenure as CEO of Bozeman Health at the end of this month,” Hill said in a statement. “I have the highest regard and respect for our board of directors, my executive and leadership colleagues, and the entire Bozeman Health team. They have my admiration and ongoing support as they navigate these unprecedented and complex challenges in the healthcare industry.”

Hill led Bozeman Health to becoming an integrated healthcare delivery system, including improving patient access to care through an expansion of community and retail healthcare sites, opening the first NICU in Southwest Montana, expanding critical care capabilities and working with independent orthopedic groups to create Montana’s only DNV accredited Spine + Joint Institute.

Bertany has served as president of Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital and Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center. The board will immediately begin a national search for a permanent CEO of Bozeman Health.

A string of executive orders from the White House created serious concerns among radiologists and other healthcare providers throughout the United States. The American College of Radiology issued a statement to help guide its members through the chaos.

Bridgefield Capital, founded in 2015, has previously invested in such popular brands as Cirque Du Soleil, Del Monte and Quiksilver. This transaction is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.

Given the precarious excitement of the moment—or is it exciting precarity?—policymakers and healthcare leaders must set directives guiding not only what to do with AI but also when to do it.
