Hospital safety grade report leads to lawsuit
Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Leapfrog Group, alleging it knowingly used incorrect information in downgrading the hospital’s safety rating from an “A” to a “C” in its fall 2017 safety grade report.
According to the Cook County Record, Saint Anthony claimed it discovered the reason behind the lower grade before the Leapfrog report was published. The hospital said it was penalized for prescribing patient medications electronically 50 to 74 percent of the time, which the lawsuit claimed was inaccurate, putting the real figure at around 95 percent. The grade, however, remained at a “C” when the report was released.
“Saint Anthony does not seek to stop publication of a Hospital Safety Grade for any other hospital and Leapfrog can continue to do so—all Saint Anthony asks is that its false hospital safety grade not be published,” the lawsuit said.
