Editorial: Mergers mean less competition, more costs

An editorial in the Los Angeles Times discusses how "lower prices, better quality” might be something we hear from healthcare providers.

But will healthcare providers live up to this promise? Sadly, the data says something entirely different. In fact, hospital and insurance mergers almost always lead to higher costs, lower efficiencies and less innovation for the simple fact that mergers reduce competition.
