Healthcare lobbyists holding off on “all-out warfare” on ACA repeal
The healthcare industry has appeared to be united in opposition to the Republican-sponsored American Health Care Act (AHCA), but Vox reports industry lobbyists are stomaching the legislation in an attempt to maintain good relations with a Republican Congress and president.
The thinking is mounting a big fight against the AHCA could shut healthcare companies out of discussions on other issues, like tax cuts. Another factor, according to Vox, is the industry “doesn’t love Obamacare enough” to fight against its repeal.
But that doesn’t mean they want to see the AHCA become law, either.
“I think industry is holding back in the Senate out of a belief that this may collapse largely on its own,” one Republican healthcare lobbyist said, “and out of concern for how Trump might retaliate if industry is perceived as killing it.”
Publicly, however, many groups, like the American Medical Association, have been bashing the bill both through advocacy in Washington and at their own conferences.
