Volunteers help fight loneliness in older hospital patients

UCLA Medical Center has taken an active role in combating loneliness in patients by providing volunteer companions in the geriatric unit.

NPR covers the facility's efforts by volunteers to keep patients company, while also learning the ins and outs of what it takes to work in a hospital. Volunteers learn medical confidentiality, how to handle emergencies and how to interact with patients with dementia.
