Two Chicago hospitals pay $160 million in malpractice settlements
Stroger Hospital and the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, both in Chicago, have been racking up malpractice suits, which are costing them, according to a recent story from Crain’s Chicago Business.
Together, the hospitals have paid $160 million to patients who’ve claimed they received improper care at their facilities. Though the settlements vary from year to year, the health systems still end up paying multimillion-dollar settlements in spite of initiatives to decrease medical mistakes.
To help cut down on avoidable deaths, the federal government has begun reducing payments to hospitals with a higher number of deaths.
