DoD launching data mining effort targeting cancer

The Department of Defense is launching a $45 million data mining project, called Big Mechanism, to help track and advance cancer research, according to a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announcement.

The program will sift through research throughout the world to find certain terms related to cancer, according to the agency. Those data will be stored in a manner more easily accessible and usable to researchers.

DARPA is seeking input from researchers at universities, in the government and from private companies on how to develop the mechanism and incorporate data mining into ongoing research. The project aims to allow researchers to identify therapy targets based on their findings once the year-long data mining project is complete.
