Cooperative agreement will link SNOMED CT and LOINC codes
The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) and the Regenstrief Institute have signed an agreement—effective for a minimum of 10 years— to begin cooperative work linking their global healthcare terminologies, Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) and SNOMED clinical terms.
The work will link the clinical semantics of SNOMED CT to LOINC codes, which provide coverage of laboratory tests and some types of clinical measurements. Specifically, Regenstrief and IHTSDO plan to focus the work on the following three domain areas:
- Laboratory, including discrete orders and observations and panel names for orders (excluding panel structure)
- Anthropomorphic measurements and evaluations
- Vital signs and physiological measurements
”This timely and significant agreement will help improve safety, functionality and interoperability for the rapidly growing number of clinicians who manage and exchange health data with EMRs,” according to an IHTSDO announcement on the partnership.
