University of Chicago, Humana partner to serve MA members

Health insurance and services provider Humana has teamed up with the University of Chicago Medicine in a value-based agreement to offer coordinated, patient-centered care to Humana’s Medicare Advantage (MA) members.

Humana is one of the nation’s largest MA plans in the nation, with more than two million individual MA members and more than 3.5 million MA member in total. The partnership will benefit Humana Chicagoland enrollees in the company’s HMO, PPO and PFFS health plans who seek care at the University of Chicago Medical Center, UChicago Medicine outpatient care centers and clinics, and the University of Chicago Physicians Group practices.

“We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with Humana, as we have a mutual commitment to innovative care delivery and collaborative community health efforts,” Raj Krishnamurthy, chief clinical transformation officer at University of Chicago Medicine, said in a statement. “Amid the transition to value-based care, UChicago Medicine will continue to enhance its efforts to coordinate care and focus on each patient’s unique health needs.”

University of Chicago Medicine offers specialty-care services for adults and children through more than 40 institutes and centers.

The partnership will focus on value-based care, which stresses personalized care tailored to patients, access to proactive health screenings and preventive care, care for those with chronic conditions, data analytics technology for better coordinated care and provider reimbursement that is linked to health outcomes.

Humana has forged similar partnerships in the past, including an agreement with the University of Louisville Physicians to expand in-network access for Humana’s Medicare HMO members at the associated primary care and specialty clinics.

“Humana is proud to collaborate with The University of Chicago Medicine, an academic medical institution with roots in the community that span more than 90 years,” Humana Regional President Chuck Dow said in a statement. “We’re excited to share our data-driven insights and decades of expertise in value-based care as we align to enhance the patient experience, provide quality patient care, and lower health care costs in Illinois.”

The healthcare company also recently broached its highest share price ever, following the acquisition of a 40 percent stake in Kindred Healthcare’ home health business, Kindred at Home, and hospice chain Curo Health Services, in two separate billion-dollar-plus deals.
