J-Co launches consulting for safe technology adoption

Joint Commission Resources (JCR), an affiliate of the Joint Commission, has launched a new consulting service that will provide an objective evaluation of technology with a patient safety focus.

The new service aims to support patient safety as JCR assists both hospitals and technology vendors in implementing technology through the integration of patient safety, informatics and clinical care expertise, according to the commission.

The consulting service was launched at a turning point for health IT  in the U.S. when many healthcare organizations and doctors are taking advantage of nearly $30 billion in federal stimulus funding to convert from paper records to EMR systems.

JCR said the initial focus of the consulting service will be directed towards those technologies that support medication processes, and medication safety will be an essential objective.

Nanne Finis, executive director of solutions consulting at JCR said its consultants will offer "safety perspectives and guidance during computerized physician order entry and EHR planning and implementation.”

The focus of the Safe Adoption of Technology service is on the convergence of technology and clinical processes to support optimal patient care and can be applied at three critical phases of technology adoption--planning and selection, design/build/implementation and post implementation, added JCR.
