Health IT salaries continue to rise

Federal initiatives including Meaningful Use and ICD-10 are keeping healthcare IT professionals in high demand—and well compensated.

The Health Information & Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) survey of 1,160 health IT professionals, which took place between August and October 2013, revealed that the average salary is $113,269 and the median salary is $95,000.

Also, the findings showed that:

  • Over two-thirds of respondents indicated that they received a salary increase. The average increase reported was 4.16 percent.
  • Slightly fewer than half of respondents reported that they received a bonus; the median bonus was 3 or 4 percent of annual salary.

The report found that senior and executive management positions showed the highest gains in salary increases, compared to associate staff, department heads, management and staff. Executive management and senior management earned on average $189,435 and $161,255, respectively, while staff earned an average of $86,536.

Health IT professionals tended to earn higher salaries in the Mid-Atlantic and Pacific regions of the U.S., the report also found.
