The big news in health IT this week was the announcement that Cerner won the Defense Healthcare Management Systems Modernization (DHMSM) contract along with partners Leidos and Accenture.
The pick was an upset--many thought rival bidder Epic would win the contract--and Allscripts also headed up a team for a chance at the $4.3 billion contract.
The contract could extend as long as 10 years. The winning companies now will be responsible for upgrading the disparate electronic medical records of 9.5 million active-duty service members and their families. The overhaul will affect 56 hospitals and hundreds of medical and dental clinics in 16 countries.
This high-profile project will have all eyes on Cerner and other EHR vendors as well.
