ANSI selects AHIMA to assist with informatics standards
The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) has been delegated to the role of secretariat for the International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 215 (ISO/TC 215) on health informatics by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
ISO/TC 215 develops and/or harmonizes functional, data and interoperability standards specifications, and reports related to electronic health records, personal health records and health information exchanges. Such standards have played an important role in various countries. For example, in the U.S., ISO standards have been adopted in meaningful use Stage 1.
ISO/TC 215 is comprised of more than 30 participating, and more than 20 observing, member countries. The U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) 223, the delegation representing the U.S. in ISO/TC 215, has also approved AHIMA as the new TAG administrator.
AHIMA introduced Lisa Spellman as the new ISO/TC 215 secretary and U.S. TAG administrator. Spellman joins AHIMA with a background in healthcare, standards, international business, and policy and education. She was most recently secretary for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) sponsored domains for Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) leading multiple efforts for HIMSS and IHE, including IHE Connectathons and HIMSS Interoperability Showcases.
“On behalf of AHIMA and its 61,000-plus members, we are pleased to have this honor and look forward to working with each delegation and providing support and leadership in the important work of global standards development,” said Spellman.
