AHRQ solicits comments on pediatric EHR core functions

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is requesting feedback on a draft technical brief on core functions of pediatric EHRs.

The document aims to help healthcare decisionmakers, such as patients, providers, health system leaders and policymakers, make well-informed decisions and ultimately improve healthcare quality, according to the 67-page brief.

The brief found that there is expert consensus in the literature that EHRs for pediatric care require specific functionalities. These functions relate to a child’s evolving physiology and maturity and involve the following areas: vaccination; development; physiologic medication dosing; pediatric disease management; pediatric norms; and the relationship between pediatric patients and their caregivers.

According to experts, “if these functionalities are implemented well, the EHR will also better support the care of all patients,” according to the report.

The agency is accepting comments through 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. Read the report
