Physician group pilots Hawaii HIE project

Seventy physicians in private practice have formed Health Information Helping Others (HIHO), a pilot project of the Hawaii Health Information Exchange (HHIE).

HIHO is a grass-roots, physician-led effort to encourage physicians to participate in the development of organizational strategies, policies and technology required  to facilitate the exchange of medical information between doctors in private practice in Hawaii, according to the Honolulu-based HHIE.

HIHO and its HIE partner, Wellogic, have been implementing an exchange that will enable collaboration and care coordination across all connected organizations.

HIHO is using Wellogic's Direct Project-based capabilities to bring physicians who do not currently have an EHR into the effort, and to enable messaging with those who have Direct capable tools, Boston-based Wellogic stated.

The Direct Project, under the guidance of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and the Nationwide Health Information Network, leverages the internet to specify a secure, standards-based way for participants to send authenticated, encrypted health information to trusted recipients.

Direct allows physicians to share clinical information in a secure way and is a component of HIHO's overall roadmap for connected healthcare in Hawaii, according to Wellogic.
