Pharmacists call for HIE access

Pharmacists need more information to do their jobs, such as labs, indication for use of medications and allergy information, said Shelly Spiro, BSPharm, FASCP, executive director of the Pharmacy HIT Collaborative, in an article published by Pharmacy Today.

Pharmacists can help improve patient outcomes in numerous ways when armed with complete information about their patients, the article says, which could be accomplished by better access to state, local and regional health information exchanges (HIEs). Pharmacists' access to these HIEs varies widely from state to state.
