Bumps in the road: HIEs face economic, cultural obstacles
Health information exchanges (HIEs) not only need to move data, they need to do so securely, quickly and cost efficiently. The many competing interests inherent in the American healthcare system have meant certain obstacles must be scaled before HIE implementation can become ubiquitous. In June 28 column in the Wall Street Journal, David Blumenthal, MD, president of the Commonwealth Fund, discusses how the industry can best meet its patients' needs.
"The digitization of our health-care system is well under way, but several obstacles frustrate efforts to take full advantage of the health information revolution," writes Blumenthal. "Perhaps the most important is our difficulty moving patients’ data, so that records can follow patients as they go from one site of care to another."
