AMIA expands clinical informatics board exam online review course

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has expanded the features of its online learning program, which prepares professionals planning to take the clinical informatics subspecialty board exam.

AMIA’s Clinical Informatics Review Courses Online Plus eLearning program now includes downloadable audio lectures, more than 135 new self-assessment questions, a briefcase of additional readings, and the ability to customize a learner’s curriculum based on practice tests and more simulated board exam questions, according to the association.

The first clinical informatics subspecialty board exam took place last fall following efforts from AMIA to professionally legitimize health informatics specialists. As of December 2013, 455 subspecialists became certified in the U.S., reports AMIA.

Until the end of 2017, any board-certified physician who has been working in the field can take the board exam without having completed a fellowship. In 2018, physicians sitting for the board exam will need to complete a 24-month fellowship pathway offered through residencies in six specialties.
