Unsecured server compromises data of 570 N.C. patients

Patient account information of 570 North Carolinians is at risk after a subcontractor failed to secure a computer server for four months.

The business associate for 24 ON Physicians, a Ga.-based medical company, exposed data including invoice numbers, charge amounts, balance due, policy numbers and billing-related status comments. Social Security numbers, bank account information and medical records were not among the at-risk information, according to a news release.

"There is no indication that personal information has been acquired or used," according to a company statement. However, it is providing free identity protection services to those affected.
