MyFitnessPal app experiences breach of 150M accounts

The popular diet and fitness application MyFitnessPal, purchased by Under Armour in 2015, has experienced a breach of security with 150 million accounts having data stolen.

In an email sent to 250 million app users, Paul Fipps, chief technology officer at Under Armour, said the breach occurred in February and was first noticed March 25. The information stolen included usernames, email addresses and passwords, the majority of which had a bcrypt hashing function.

In the email, Fipps urged users to change their passwords for their accounts, as well as passwords for any other account that uses the same information. Additionally, he warned users to review accounts for suspicious activity, be cautious about requests for personal data and avoid clicking unknown links.

To combat the breach, MyFitnessPal stated it was working with data security firms to assist in the investigation while notifying the proper authorities.
