Lack of security in medical devices, records pose threats to patients

Hacking has made its way into the heart of healthcare, with vulnerabilities in many devices essential to patients. Following a string of hacked medical devices, including pacemakers and insulin pumps, and compromised health data, cyber security is a topic more prevalent than ever for those in healthcare.

With the growing popularity of medial wearables and electronic health records (EHRs), security threats continue to increase and put patients at risk of receiving a fatal overdose from a hacked insulin pump of a breach of their health data.

“The entire extortion landscape has changed,” said Ed Cabrera, chief cyber security officer at the threat research firm Trend Micro. “You do get into this life-or-death situation potentially.”
