HHS seeks thoughts on national health plan identifier

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a request for information on national health plan identifier.

This ongoing issue has gone through several starts and stops, most recently with a final rule from 2012 that adopted a standard for a unique health plan identifier (HPID). The National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, which serves in an advisory role, late in 2014 recommended that HPID not be used in HIPAA transactions. HHS then delayed enforcement of the rule.

The request for information seeks comments on the HPID enumeration structure and use of supporting concepts, as well as another optional identifier for non-covered entities that need to be identified in HIPAA transactions.

Access the request for information which has a 60-day comment period starting May 29.
