Folder left in public area put Indiana Health Services patients’ data at risk

About 620 Indiana Health Services (IHS) patients in South Dakota have been alerted to a breach of their personal information.

A folder accidentally left in a public area, which has since been recovered, compromised the names, Social Services numbers and Department of Veterans Affairs enrollment information of these patients, according to a release.

An investigation found that it appears no information was accessed by unauthorized information. Affected patients are receiving free credit monitoring for one year.

To prevent future incidences, all IHS staff in the great plains area will receive additional training in HIPAA privacy and security rules, according to a release.
