Exercise app uses crowdsourced data to develop personalized plans
Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle have created an exercise platform that uses crowdsourcing data to create personalized workout plans that adhere to national exercise recommendations.
CrowdFit creates nonexpert workout plans tailored to a user’s level of exercise, schedule and interests. Users input their data, and then a nonexpert then creates a profile with a week-long exercise plan. Users can view plans through the app which provides additional information on how to get the most out of a workout. At the end of the week, user feedback is collected and used to update the schedule for next week.
“Most apps available to the public offer limited ability to customize an exercise plan—criteria like goals, age and weight,” said lead author Elena Agapie, a UW doctoral student in the department of human centered design and engineering. “With CrowdFit, we designed greater flexibility to customize exercise plans to a user’s schedule, constraints and nuanced preferences.”
