UCHealth takes full ownership of 2 hospitals, 17 freestanding EDs
Aurora, Colorado-based UCHealth has bought out the stake of a bankrupt co-operator to assume full ownership of two hospitals and 17 freestanding emergency departments (EDs).
The Gazette of Colorado Springs reports the deal involved acquiring the stake from Texas-based Adeptus Health as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. The exact terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed. UCHealth had already been a majority owner in the facilities, including UCHealth Hospital Broomfield and Grandview Hospital in Colorado Springs and, each of which have 18 inpatient rooms and had opened in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
Full control of the freestanding EDs comes with some controversy, as the same kind of facilities in Texas have been found to target wealthier, privately-insured patients.
“It's important for patients to have comprehensive care options close to home," said UCHealth spokesperson John Waver. "Because if they have an urgent care need, a patient will do best to have an urgent care location close to them. If they have an emergency need, it would be beneficial to them if they had an emergency location close to home.”
