23 Houston-area hospitals evacuating patients due to Tropical Storm Harvey

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,500 patients at 23 licensed hospitals in and around Houston have been evacuated due to flooding caused by Tropical Storm Harvey, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The storm broke the record for greatest amount of measured single-storm rainfall for the continental U.S by dumping nearly 52 inches of rain in some parts of the region. Many hospitals, including several within the Texas Medical Center, opted to shelter in place, but some had already started evacuating on Sunday. On Tuesday, West Houston Medical Center, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center and Houston Northwest Medical Center announced they would begin evacuating critical care patients.

According to HCA Healthcare, 24 patients from the three hospitals were being transported, some by air, to hospitals in the Medical City Health System network in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
