Dirty dozen: WHO lists 12 pathogens in need of research

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a list chronicling antibiotic-resistant “priority pathogens” to guide research and development of new antibiotics.

The list is split into three categories, classifying the need for new antibiotics by critical, high and medium priority. The WHO hopes the list will further push research and development (R&D) of new antibiotics to assist in the fight against antibiotic-resistant infections.

"This list is a new tool to ensure R&D responds to urgent public health needs," said Marie-Paule Kieny, PhD, the WHO assistant director-general for health systems and innovation. "Antibiotic resistance is growing, and we are fast running out of treatment options. If we leave it to market forces alone, the new antibiotics we most urgently need are not going to be developed in time."
